Online Television
A Fast Growing Trend

One of the fastest growing trends is online television. With technology being so advanced, people's entertainment options have increased drastically over the past several years.

First, people began instant messaging and posting on message boards. Then, they began playing online role-playing games-and making friends around the world in the process. Digital cameras allow people to upload, share and view the photos of others online.

YouTube is one of the most popular sites for sharing homemade videos. In fact, some people create their own television shows then stream them on YouTube.

If you're not interested in amateur TV, however, you can watch some of your favourite network television shows on the internet.

All of the major networks-ABC, NBC, and CBS-offer free programming online. Sometimes they offer only an episode or two, but with some shows, you can watch the entire season online.

Since soap operas have very loyal audiences, they must be rejoicing that at they can view soap operas online, too. For instance, ABC offers a week's worth of its soaps online, the online episode debuting the day after it airs on actual television.

For busy people who enjoy educational programming, never fear-PBS now offers dozens of shows online-for free! Some cable networks, such as Comedy Central and Discovery, offer online television episodes as well.

When television first began running online, many writers became upset because they didn't feel they were being compensated fairly enough. This was a big issue in the famous writers' strike of 2007-2008.

The rise in viewers of internet television has risen greatly in the past five years or so. Take watching televised sports online as an example. In 2005, 20,000 people watched an online basketball tournament. In 2006, 1.3 million people watched a similar game, and it's expected that over 8 million people will watch basketball online in 2010.

The great thing is that the networks don't lose money, because they still earn millions from television advertisements and their earnings from ads placed on online television websites add to their profits as well.

One thing that you need to know if you want to enjoy internet television is that you must have a fast, reliable internet service provider and an updated computer system. If your computer lacks enough memory, you will not be able to get a smooth connection.

This means that you will get to watch maybe a few seconds of a program before it cuts out and needs to reload. Such interruptions can make for a very frustrating experience.

Americans have always enjoyed watching television. With quicker internet speeds and more viewing options available, it's obvious that watching TV online is not just a fad.

It's something that is becoming a regular routine for many because it allows people to watch programs when they want them and with less commercial interruptions. You just have to have the appropriate equipment to take advantage of this trend.
