iPod Instructions: First Things First
Going through the iPod instructions will show you how to get the best out of the features that comes with your particular model.
When you know all the different features onboard and how to operate them you, will get to enjoy pure music magic.
Following the basic instructions for all iPods is relatively easy, as all models operate very much the same.
However, some operating instructions may vary between models, with some features buried beneath menus.
iPod Instructions: Powering Up
One important instruction I would recommend you follow:
Make sure that your iPod battery is fully charged before you start using it for the first time. By failing to do so, you may not get the maximum playback time (runtime) for the rest of the battery's life.
Remember, these batteries don't come cheap (around $50+ each) so it pays to maintain the battery life.
The earlier iPod models, i.e. first and second generations, used lithium polymer batteries, while the newer models use lithium-ion batteries which have longer charge cycles. To charge the battery, all you need to do is plug your iPod into your computer, until it is fully charged, as all iPods charge when connected to a computer.
If you have an iPod or iPod Shuffle, allow about 4 hours for it to charge. For an iPod Nano allow at least 3 hours for it to charge.
Tip: When charging your iPod, it is best to take your iPod out of its carrying case as some cases can cause the iPod to get hot while charging. This excess heat may affect the battery's capacity.

Using Your iPod: Downloading iTunes
Regardless of what iPod model you use, there are certain basic operations they all have in common.
iPod Instructions: Install iTunes
Your iPod is a fantastic portable music and video player – but that is only once music and videos have been downloaded to it. For this you would need to install the iTunes software on your computer.
The iTunes software is free from
Apple Downloads
There are separate versions for both Windows and Mac computers.
Once you have iTunes installed on your computer you can now choose the source of the music you want downloaded. There are three main sources of music:
Music already stored on your computer
Songs you bought from the iTunes music store, and
Transfered songs from your CD collection
Using the iTunes software you can organize, and store your music on your computer prior to transferring it to your iPod.
To transfer your music to your iPod you will need to connect your iPod to your computer using the USB interface (connector) cable that came with your iPod. (Don't worry, you won't go wrong, there's only one way it will fit)
If your iPod came with an iPod Dock (the stand that holds your iPod upright), you can connect your computer to the iPod Dock instead of to your iPod. Then place your iPod upright in the Dock.
Once your iPod is connected to your computer iTunes will automatically recognize the connection and display onscreen prompts. You then just select the music you want transferred and iTunes will do it for you. You now have your iPod and iTunes in sync.
You now have your music on your iPod.
Depending on which model you have, it pays to get familiar with all the menus and features on your iPod.
