iPhone Applications:
Some Standard Applications

There are hundreds of iPhone applications (also known as iPhone apps) available. Some have been developed by Apple while others have been developed by outside third parties.

Also, here is something I find very interesting; 'The University of Saskatchewan will soon be offering iPhone programming courses, which will also be a first for Canada'.

Here is a list of some of the standard iPhone apps.

Standard iPhone Applications

iPhone

This application works like any cell phone. The iPhone has position sensors, which turns off the multi-touch screen when you hold the iPhone to your ear.

While on a call you can turn on the speaker phone, mute and use the keypad, initiate a three-way call, place the call on hold, while you add the caller to your contact list with just a touch of a button.

Also, while still on the phone you can call up another application. The iPhone also has photo caller ID so that you can add a photo for each individual on your contact list.

Other iPhone Applications

  • Favourites: Contains your speed dial list. With a tap of a button you can add a name from your Contact list to your favourites.

  • Another screen will also show all the phone numbers for a particular contact. Just tap the specific number you want and the call will be made.

  • Recents: Allows you to call up all your calls or just the missed calls with just a tap of a button.

  • Keypad: Displays the keypad for dialling numbers and entering contact information.

  • Contacts: Enables you to call, text email, add a contact to your favourites, and map an address

  • Voicemail: Accesses your visual voicemail

  • Mail Application: Supports virtually all types of e-mail in full html in an attractive display. Attachments, both Word and PDF can also be displayed.

  • iTunes Activation & Integration: Here, you simply take the iPhone and connect it to your computer's USB port, and iTunes will recognize your iPhone. You then enter your information in the screens and the music it is ready for you to enjoy.

  • Internet Connectivity: This is via the fully fledged Safari internet browser. By rotating the iPhone you can change from portrait to landscape viewing. By pinching and stretching you can zoom in and out.

  • iPod: The iPhone comes with the best iPod digital music player and multi-touch widescreen video viewer.

  • Text Messaging: With the iPhone you can send SMS text messages using the touch type keyboard. You can also organize your text messages by phone number or by conversations.

  • Video Viewing: Allows you to Stream videos from YouTube

  • Camera and Photos Apps: Enables you to view photos on your iPhone. These photos can either be taken using the iPhone or uploaded to the iPhone via iTunes.

  • Calendar Application: Allows you to add appointments manually or sync them with your desktop calendar.

  • Stocks: Stocks are powered by Yahoo's online stock tracker and are delayed by the industry standard length of time.

  • Maps: This is powered by Google Maps.

  • Weather: You can view and store the current weather reports of a number of different cities.

  • Clock: the iPhone clock comes with four applications: world clock, alarm, stopwatch and timer.

  • Calculator: the iPhone comes with a standard, non-scientific calculator.

  • Notes: This is covered by the iPhone's notepad.

  • Settings: This is where you set all you settings, such as, e-mail login information, Wi-Fi passwords, ringtones, wallpaper and all other applications.
  • These iPhone apps are just a few of the various apps available fo your iPhone. For more apps you should Apple's store online.
